Abstract:
The absence of sectors responsible for document management, such as Central Archives,
in the Federal Institutes of Education is worrying, since documentary heritage is being lost, and
thus its history. This paper presents the archival diagnosis of the inactive collection of the Federal
Institute of Education, Science and Technology of São Paulo that had accumulated without
treatment in more than a hundred years of history. It presents the structure and the administrative
context of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of São Paulo since its first
formation as School of Artistic Apprentices. It presents the critical situation in which are the
documentary mass formed by administrative and academic archives deposited in places with very
bad conditions where it accelerates its deterioration. Provides an overview of the case study as a
basis for document management programs training.
