Resumen:
The advancement of access to the means of production, once centered only on large
conglomerates, individuals find ways of communicating that are independent of the
permission or editing of experts and others. This research brings the independent
literature as a possibility of spontaneous expression by different layers of society, as a
cultural manifestation replete with important references to the local memory. Faced with
an independent production context, it is the objective of this dissertation to analyze how
public libraries see this type of literature and incorporate copies in its collection. For
this purpose, interviews were conducted and a questionnaire was applied to community,
park and municipal libraries located in the State of Rio de Janeiro. A bibliographical
survey was carried out on the characterization of independent literature and on the
mission of the public library in the 21st century. It is concluded, among other
perspectives, that little is reflected on the space of independent literature in the library
and on its specificities.
